AutoZine Awards 2010

Surprise of the Year

China became world No. 1
Half a century ago, Mao Zedong forecasted China to overtake the Great Britain and the USA in 5 and 10 years respectively. Ridiculously, his ambition resulted in poverty, hunger and tragedy. In 2009, the now capitalism China finally delivered what Mao promised. Its automotive industry produced 13.8 million cars, surpassing Japan to be the world's largest car producer. The very same year saw China sold 13.6 million cars locally, overtaking USA to be the largest car market in the world. All these happened incredibly quick. 5 years ago, it was still producing 5 million cars a year.
