Renault Twingo

Despite being the smallest manufacturer in the "European big six", Renault leads others in introducing radical idea. One of the examples is the original Espace, which was the pioneer of MPV. Another is Twingo, which created the market of "Sub-supermini" and pioneers one-box design.

Before 1993, there is only one manufacturer, Fiat, producing cars smaller than those so-called supermini ( e.g., VW Polo and Peugeot 106 ). However, both Fiat Panda and Cinequecento are no more than those rough and simple cars target at poor buyers, while the 1993 Renault Twingo introduced real quality and fun ever appeared in such price.

Of course, to build such price-sensitive cars with the quality of big cars, Renault have to base it on a shortened version of Clio's platform. Engineers still needed to find a cheap engine. Here the 1.15 litres base engine of Clio ( once again ) is employed. It is by no means powerful, but 60hp would be sufficient in such performance-insensitve segment. Besides, you can find no other engine available because the production number cannot afford more options and bigger range other than a single model.

Twingo is as well-built as VW Polo, further more, it provides the most radical one-box styling, colourful painting and most fashionable cabin with the help of fashion designers. Clever packaging made it more fun to own and to see than any other small cars, at least until the arrival of Ford Ka.
